W. A. Mozart Così fan tutte

In 2013, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century performed the iconic Mozart opera Cosi fan tutte for the first time. 'Downright spectacular' wrote De Volkskrant about the production at the time, and newspaper Trouw characterized the orchestra as 'playing sublimely' (*****). All the more reason to stage the Cosi again this season: a new semi-staged production with an international star cast.

The Mozart Opera is led by conductor Manoj Kamps and director Lisenka Heijboer Castañón. They are working together for the third time in this production. After the successful "Faust [Working Title]" and "I Have Missed You Forever" at the Opera Forward Festival, they now take on "Cosi fan Tutte. The Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century is given vocal ammunition by top singers such as Claron McFadden and Henk Neven. 'Cosi fan Tutte' can only be seen and heard seven times in the Netherlands.

Musically and vocally, the performance was at top level. Kamps led with great superiority and allowed the transitions between recitatives, ensembles and arias to proceed flawlessly and smoothly. This gave the evening momentum and the orchestra, in which all the wind players - from oboe to horn - excelled, followed Kamps alertly.

Especially for the AVROTROS Friday night concert, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century brings a thoroughly romantic program. Beethoven is flanked in this concert by two female composers: Clara Schumann and Emilie Mayer. And none other than Olga Pashchenko will perform the solo piano parts. Pashchenko will play on her own instrument for this program.

Although Clara Schumann is quite well-known in the Netherlands, Emilie Mayer does not immediately ring a bell with many concertgoers. In German-speaking countries, however, she is seen as the female Beethoven. She began composing late in life, but wrote an impressive eight symphonies, an opera and many songs and chamber music. The unknown overture that the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century plays tonight is a whirlwind of highs and lows and seems almost to be intended as an ode to Beethoven.

The Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century is celebrating Christmas in style this year. A Baroque program to lick your fingers at: Handel, Vivaldi, J.S. Bach and Delalande and, of course, Corelli, sung by the magnificent Nardus Williams and conducted by David Bates.

Nardus Williams received an international opera award for Rising Star at the end of 2022 in Milan. Never before has the British "one to look out for" (guardian) been heard in the Netherlands. Together with early music specialist conductor and clavicinist David Bates, they guarantee a special evening to usher in Christmas. Their joint performance of works by Purcell at the BBC Proms last year received high praise from the international press.

Every two years, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century performs a passion with Cappella Amsterdam. Two years ago the St. Matthew Passion, so this year it's Johannes' turn again. No matter how often it plays this repertoire, it always sounds different. Never do the musicians and singers take the score for granted.

Bach's Passions keep the Netherlands in their grip every year, and every year there seem to be more and more to come. And this is another reason why the orchestra is proud to be able to bring the international creme de la creme of early music to the Netherlands this season. Specialists in the genre such as Norwegian soprano Berit Norbakken British baritone Peter Harvey shine in Bach's masterpiece. Conductor Daniel Reuss leads the orchestra and singers to the emotional heights and depths in the story of the crucifixion.

The Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century joins forces once again with recorder player and singer Lucie Horsch. A special program on recorder and voice with works by J.S. Bach, Antonio Vivaldi and a brand new work by Reza Namavar. Old music in a new way; new music inspired by old masters.

Bach wrote no solo works for recorder, and yet the evening opens and closes with a concerto by the German grand master. The opening was arranged by founder of the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century Frans Brüggen; the closing piece Lucie Horsch herself arranged for her instrument. This is how Bach sounded if he did compose for recorder!

The Latin name for recorder "ricordare la voce," literally means "remembering the voice. Lucie takes it to the test. She arranges Bach's concerto in a minor for recorder and brings the aria "Stirb in mir, Welt" back to its vocal roots.

Especially for this program, composer Reza Namavar is writing a new work inspired by Vivaldi's double concerto in a minor. The double violin concerto becomes a violin recorder concerto.
