How is it possible for a composer to be so popular in her own time, only to disappear without a trace later on? Elisabeth Hetherington, a rising star on the vocal scene and an artist with a big personality, is putting together a varied program in collaboration with the musicians of O18c to celebrate and trace Martines' musical background. She grew up in a home with Metastasio and the young struggling Haydn, and was educated by the best music teachers of the time. As a young woman, Martines attracted attention with her beautiful voice and piano playing and would later distinguish herself as a fiery composer of instrumental, choral and vocal music, and it is a wonder she is not celebrated today. Kate Moore is writing a new composition inspired by the idea of how it is possible that someone so successful in her day could just disappear.
