Le Nozze di Figaro viewed differently. The program consists of a string quartet by Mozart, written shortly after the Nozze, and parts of a very interesting arrangement of the opera for string quartet, published in Bonn in 1799 and recently rediscovered in the archives of the Abbey of Melk in Austria. Making arrangements for home use was very common at the time, allowing people who could not afford the opera or lived far from an opera house to still enjoy the music and earn the arranger money in a time without recordings and copyrights. Along with two singers, the strings will perform a selection of arias and duets from the Nozze, some for strings alone and others with singers. This music will be combined with readings from the diaries of Michael Kelly. Kelly was a star singer of the time who performed in the first production of the Nozze in Vienna in 1786 - and who regularly drank punch and played billiards with Mozart. More than two hundred years later, his diaries provide unique insight into the world of opera from the perspective of a performing musician.
